International Stud: A Play From Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song
Why this play and why by me?
In a society that continually finds ways to deny people basic human rights, gay stories must continue to be told in different forms and outlets as a way of continually advocating for equality. As a gay man who struggled with his own identity, this offers me the opportunity to use my own experience and struggles of finding my true identity and love in a world that seeks to deny me of those rights. I hope to use this story to be a light in the world for those who feel like they are in the dark. I also hope that this piece of theatre can be an affirmation for those looking to live their truths and opens the heart and mind of those who seek to deny the gay community of their rights.

The central theme is unrequited love and the impact of someone’s first love. While love takes many forms, its effect can play a significant role in an individual’s life. This piece explores the challenges of love stemming from both personal desires and societal pressures, and the impacts of losing your first love. The piece explores the lengths that one is willing to go to fill the void of loneliness that comes with losing love. “International Stud” will test our thoughts on whether perfect love exists, or if people come into our lives to help us grow and leave when there is nothing left to learn.
